Steam Cleaning vs Dry Cleaning Carpets

An honest, side-by-side comparison to help you choose the right method for your home.

Published February 2026 — By FreshWave Carpet Care

The Two Main Carpet Cleaning Methods

When it comes to professional carpet cleaning, two methods dominate the industry: steam cleaning (hot water extraction) and dry cleaning (low-moisture cleaning). Each has its place, but they're very different in terms of cleaning depth, dry time, cost, and results.

Steam Cleaning (Hot Water Extraction)

How it works: Superheated water (up to 110°C) is injected deep into carpet fibres at high pressure, dissolving dirt, bacteria, and contaminants. Powerful vacuum suction immediately extracts the water along with everything it's loosened.

Dry Carpet Cleaning

How it works: A dry chemical compound or low-moisture foam is spread across the carpet and worked into fibres with a machine. The compound absorbs dirt and is then vacuumed away. Very little water is used.

When to Choose Steam Cleaning

When Dry Cleaning Makes Sense

Our Recommendation

For most Brampton homes, steam cleaning (hot water extraction) is the clear winner. It provides the deepest clean, removes the most contaminants, is recommended by carpet manufacturers, and when performed with truck-mounted equipment (like ours), dries within just 1-4 hours.

Dry cleaning has its place for specific situations, but it should not replace periodic deep steam cleaning. Think of dry cleaning as maintenance and steam cleaning as the real deal.
